First of May Riots

Mass performance with live audio transmissions. A public movement event, a mass spectacle involving thousands of citizens: demonstrators, policemen and members of the press who act in a scene of fire, broken glass, camera flashes, stones, watercannons and sirens. A readymade, a seasonal ritual of power, passion, ideals, violence and youth. Public Movement distributed headphones offering 5 radio channels created especially for the riots.

Channel 1. Live Sociology - Robert Schmidt, Sociologist, Freie Universität Berlin and Thomas Scheffer, Sociologist, Humboldt Universität zu Berlin.

Channel 2. Music for Riots - live music by Nackt (Warren Suicide) + guests.

Channel 3. Talk - Joseph Vogl

Channel 4. News - archive recordings from Sender Freies Berlin, Deutscher Fernsehfunk, Deutschlandradio, Deutschlandfunk, Umbruch-Bildarchiv.

Channel 5. Live DJ - Sami Khatib and Julia Wilton
First of May Riots was the second phase of Public Movement’s project Performing Politics for Germany.
